Rio Seco – Pinar de Campoverde

The Rio Seco located in the pine forest area of Pinar de Campoverde, near the outdoor tennis courts and chapel.

Starting in the hills of Sierra Escalona and reaching all the way to Mil Palmeras where it meets the Mediterranean Sea.

The Rio Seco is an unspoilt, beautiful, and picturesque natural dry riverbed which spans approx 19km long and has two hiking trails: one of 4 km within Pinar de Campoverde and the of 10km towards Mil Palmeras.

During these trails one can appreciate the effects and formations made by the water erosion on its beautiful yellow sandstone walls, which have visible layers of compressed shells. Don’t forget to look out for fossils (molluscs, gastropods, even shark teeth) from the Pliocene period during the walk, and the sculpture of the Pegasus that is carved into the riverbed!

There is an array of both floral and fauna, which include rosemary, thyme, palms, esparto grass; kingfishers, bee-eaters, nightingales, eagles, kestrels, owls, woodpeckers; hedgehogs, rabbits, lizards, frogs; and a vast catalogue of invertebrate species.

There is also an allocated barbeque area with a playground, where the whole family can enjoy a picnic.
